Even before the release of Bollywood actor Richa Chadha’s film Madam Chief Minister, the movie got mired in controversy. Amidst all the drama surrounding the film, Richa Chadha, who plays a pivotal role in the movie, made a post on her social media today. As the film releases across the country and abroad today, the actress shared her ‘parting thoughts’ in a long note. The trailer of Madam Chief Minister was well received by the audience. And, Chadha also got applause for her stellar performance, from industry friends.
Richa Chadha dropped a post on her Twitter and captioned it with a red heart emoji. The actor shared her ‘parting thoughts’ before the release of Madam Chief Minister. She wrote, “The film releases across the country and abroad today. Still reading some very angry tweets, threads about myself, (not the film yet, no one has seen it). Some people are just venting. And that’s ok. I am listening, learning... as I have been attempting to, for the past 2-3 years...” Sharing her thoughts further, Richa Chadha continued, “Here, some thoughts on the representation debate, from my limited , self-admittedly privileged understanding. The anger is completely understandable, especially with the poster et al. I get it. I understand this anger. But as is often the case with anger, it is in fact misdirected since I am not the sole creator of this film.” The actress mentioned how hundreds if not thousands of people have worked on the making of the movie.
Talking about the controversy regarding the post that portrayed the Dalit community in a stereotypical way, Richa Chadha wrote, “I can’t undo historical caste injustices, or brutalisation dating back thousands of years. Don’t expect me to become a scholar or expert on the subject,by acting in one film, especially when it is as vast and complicated as caste and varna.” She added, “I don’t even contest the fact that my performance will never ever be able to replicate the lived experience of a DBA actor. I am aware of that and it only made me work harder.” The actor then said that as someone who is an artist, she can choose to do whatever she can, in her capacity. Richa continued, “I have attempted to play this part with dignity, honesty and empathy. As that was frankly the only thing in my control.” Take a look at the note below:

Finally, concluding her note on her ‘parting thoughts’, Richa Chadha said that this “empathy isn’t charity or patronisation”. She also cleared it out that she is not trying to confuse “trolls/death-threat givers/fake-news spreaders” for genuine voices. While the actress expressed her thoughts, for the unversed, the makers of the film faced severe backlash on social media for portraying the Dalit community in a stereotypical way. Later, Richa also released an official statement on the same.
